Speaking during a three-day Christmas visit which ends on Friday, he added that the work of Polish soldiers is highly thought of by the US and NATO.

He told Polish soldiers in Kandahar on Thursday that if "in the near future, the American military is stationed at [Poland's] eastern border", President-elect Donald Trump "has stated very clearly: [the US] will be there because you are here,” referring to the efforts of the Polish military in the region.

Macierewicz broke the traditional Polish Christmas wafer with the soldiers at the Al Jaber base in Kuwait and at the Kandahar, Gamberi and Bagram bases in Afghanistan.

In Bagram, he took part in a Catholic mass and a video conference between the soldiers and their families in Poland. (vb)
