About a month after his appointment as US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson spoke on the phone with Poland’s Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski, the Polish ministry’s spokesperson said on Thursday.

During the conversation Waszczykowski thanked Tillerson for increased US military presence in Poland and the region.

US troops have over recent weeks arrived in Poland to bolster the alliance’s eastern flank, as was decided at a NATO summit in Warsaw last year.

But US forces are also active in Central and Eastern Europe under American initiatives, including the European Reassurance Initiative, the Polish foreign minister said.

Waszczykowski and Tillerson agreed that bilateral security and defence projects – including a partnership of the countries’ air forces and missile interceptors stationed in Redzikowo, in northern Poland – were valuable investments.

Poland’s foreign minister and the US Secretary of State agreed to speak again in Washington on 21 March during a meeting of the Global Coalition Against Daesh, also known as ISIS. (vb)
