The two leaders spoke on the telephone on Wednesday evening after May sent European Council President Donald Tusk a letter triggering Article 50 of the EU's Lisbon Treaty, the formal start of Britain’s divorce from the bloc.

"Both prime ministers agreed in the course of the conversation that this negotiation process should be efficient and smooth, and should take place in a manner that will minimize the potential negative effects of Brexit," said Polish government spokesman Rafał Bochenek.

"From the outset, we are pointing out that two issues are particularly important in these negotiations and should be clarified," Bochenek added.

The first concerns the fulfillment of obligations towards the EU budget, the other is guaranteeing the rights of EU citizens, including Poles, living in the UK.

Bochenek added that the phone conversation with Szydło was one of the first talks that Prime Minister May held with a European leader. “This shows that Poland’s voice is heard," he said.
