Brexit negotiations will be “impossible” if emotions are not kept in check, the European Council president has said after the UK's PM accused some EU politicians of trying to affect a British election.

“These negotiations are difficult enough as they are,” European Council President Donald Tusk said, adding: “If we start arguing before they even begin, they will become impossible”.

Tusk, a former Polish Prime Minister, said that “stakes are too high to let our emotions get out of hand” and named discretion, moderation, mutual respect and good will as necessary for success.

But the European Commission said it had no opinion on British Prime Minister Theresa May's accusation, and a spokesman for the commission said that “people get excited whenever we have elections”.

A German newspaper recently reported that European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told May that Brexit could not succeed.

And on Thursday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Britons not to delude themselves that they would retain EU rights after Brexit.

May said that “the European Commission's negotiating stance has hardened, threats against Britain have been issued by European politicians and officials".

"All of these acts have been deliberately timed to affect the result of the general election," she said.
