In a phone conversation on Monday, Szydło congratulated May on her recent election win, and expressed hope for close cooperation between Poland and the United Kingdom, said Polish government spokesman Rafał Bochenek.

He added that the close working relationship between the two countries will be confirmed during both prime ministers' consultations which will take place in the autumn. Discussions are currently underway on finding a mutually acceptable date, Bochenek added.

Szydlo said that in connection with the start of the Brexit negotiations in Brussels, she is “determined to work for the... social rights of Poles living in the UK”, Bochenek said.

Talks on the framework of the UK's exit from the EU were started on Monday in Brussels. British people voted to leave the bloc in a referendum last year. There are about a million Poles currently living in the UK, the largest minority in the country. (rg/pk)
