The two ministers emphasised the importance of bilateral contacts in the political and economic spheres, particularly in a wider context of cooperation in Baltic Sea and the Arctic region.

Waszczykowski thanked Iceland for its support of Polish efforts to strengthen security in Europe and NATO.

Waszczykowski also met representatives of the Polish community in Iceland. He welcomed the community’s active role in the political and public life of Iceland.

Poles constitute the largest group of foreigners who settled in Iceland in recent years.

On Tuesday, the first day of his visit, Waszczykowski attended an informal foreign ministers’ meeting of the Council of the Baltic Sea States in Reykjavik.

In his address, he said that a stable, well-functioning Baltic region – which is a "unique example" of EU and NATO members and non-members – constitutes a "key element of the European security system".

This was the first visit to Iceland by a Polish foreign minister since 1976. (mk/rg)
