The recent explosion of a Mercedes in Kyiv, which killed senior Ukrainian intelligence officer Maxim Shapoval, has been labelled a terrorist attack by Ukrainian forces, according to Poland's niezalezna.pl website.

The website added that the explosion was the latest in “a string of terrorist attacks” with security services officer Yuri Vozny also killed in a recent car bombing.

Zorian Shkiriak, who the website said is an aide to Ukraine’s interior minister, said Shapoval had been investigating Russian aggression in Ukraine.

According to journalist and friend of Shapoval Roman Boczkała, Russia was behind the blasts, niezalezna.pl said.

Boczkała added that a similar car bombing which killed journalist Pavel Sheremet a year ago was not properly investigated, so the chances of finding Shapoval’s killers are slim, niezalezna.pl reported.

Boczkała said Russia’s strategy against Ukraine is becoming subversive and aims to destabilise the country’s internal situation, according to niezaleza.pl. (vb/pk)
