US President Donald Trump has been well prepared for his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Polish foreign minister has said following Trump's Thursday meetings in Warsaw.

Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski also said that Trump did give Warsaw assurances that US troops would stay in Poland for as long as Russia continued to pose a threat, despite the US President saying on Thursday that there were no guarantees.

“I think there was some misunderstanding … using the word 'guarantees'. In diplomacy-speak guarantees mean treaties... We are not negotiating treaties,” Waszczykowski said.

“Of course promises that [US troops] would be here as long as a danger exists were made,” he added.

During his speech in Warsaw Trump called for Russia to "cease its destabilising activities in Ukraine and elsewhere", but Waszczykowski said the US should be doing more about Russia's Ukraine policy.

He added that Trump was briefed on Poland's and the region's view of Russian aggression.

“[Trump] got a huge dose of information and facts about Russia so I assume he is well prepared for talks with Putin,” Waszczykowski said. (vb/pk)
