"The change of leadership in both our countries has created an opportunity to accelerate and deepen ties between Poland and the United States even further," said Waszczykowski.

He was speaking at the Global Forum - an annual transatlantic conference on democracy, prosperity and security - which started in Warsaw on Thursday to coincide with US President Donald Trump’s visit to the Polish capital.

It was Trump's second trip to Europe as president.

“This visit confirms this new dynamic. We hope this is just the beginning of a new chapter, full of new security and economic projects," the Polish foreign minister said.

Waszczykowski hails from Poland’s ruling, conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, which came to power in general elections in late 2015 amid promises of sweeping change.

Polish President Andrzej Duda voiced hoped after meeting Trump in Warsaw on Thursday that a long-term contract would soon be signed for the supply of American LNG to Poland.
