On Thursday afternoon a van mowed down pedestrians on Barcelona’s famous Las Ramblas boulevard, killing at least 13 and injuring more than 100 people.

The so-called Islamic State has said it carried out the attack.

The same day, a house exploded in Alcanar on Spain's eastern coast in what is suspected to be a related incident, and five terror suspects were shot by police in the town of Cambrils, south of Barcelona, after ploughing into pedestrians and killing one woman, according to media reports.

“While this is a time of tears and pain, we cannot allow fear to paralyse us,” Szydło said, adding that Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy could count on Poland to help bolster security and fight terrorism.

Poland's interior ministry said on Friday that Polish police would be more vigilant but that the country would not introduce a terror threat alert after the attacks in Spain.
