Polish, Ukrainian presidents hold talks in New York

The Polish and Ukrainian presidents have discussed a proposal to send UN peacekeepers to the conflict-ridden eastern Donbass region, an official has said.

Poland’s Andrzej Duda met his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko in New York during the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Duda's chief of staff, Krzysztof Szczerski, said the presidents “discussed in detail the situation in Donbass, especially a proposal to engage UN peacekeeping forces in this area.
“They said that such a proposal requires careful consideration and its mandate must be acceptable to the Ukrainian side," Szczerski added.
Szczerski said the two leaders also discussed "a common position opposing the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline,” a project which would send Russian gas to Western Europe, circumventing Poland, Ukraine and the Baltic states.
The presidents agreed that Duda would visit Ukraine in December.
Szczerski added that the two leaders also discussed cooperation between Warsaw and Kiev in view of Poland being elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2018-2019.
