In a commentary for the Polish Press Agency (PAP), May said that securing the rights of EU citizens in Britain, including around a million Polish nationals, was one of the key goals of the Brexit negotiations.

Her comments follow a speech by May in Florence, Italy, on 22 September, where she proposed a two-year transition deal before a permanent post-Brexit trade deal comes into force.

In the coming years Britain wants to be the EU’s strongest ally and partner, the British prime minister said. She added that Britain was unconditionally committed to preserving European security.

May also said that the withdrawal of Britain, the union’s second-biggest net payer, from the EU would not take place at the expense of the largest net beneficiaries of the European budget, including Poland.

Britain is to leave the EU by the end of March 2019. (aba/pk)
