She was speaking in the Slovak capital Bratislava, where she met other Central European heads of government on Friday.

Briefing reporters at a press conference, Szydło said: "We are pleased with progress made on citizens' rights, but the headway on financial issues is unsatisfactory, so for now it is impossible to move to the second stage of negotiations."

The EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier and Britain’s Brexit Secretary David Davis said on Thursday that the expected progress had not been achieved in the UK's exit talks with the EU.

Meanwhile, Polish-British intergovernmental consultations are scheduled to take place in Warsaw on December 21. They will be attended by Szydło and her UK counterpart Theresa May, along with other top officials.

It is estimated that up to 1 million Poles live in Britain, the majority of whom emigrated there after Poland joined the European Union in 2004. The Polish community comprises the largest migrant population of EU nationals based in Britain.
