Opening Europe’s borders to migrants was an irresponsible decision by politicians, Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski has said, naming German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Speaking to Italian journalists in Rome on Wednesday, Waszczykowski said: "Irresponsible politicians are those who opened the borders and accepted a wave of migration, the way Angela Merkel did."

He added, as cited by Italy's Ansa news agency: "It was an irresponsible move because today we are dealing with hundreds of thousands of migrants who have not been identified, many missing minors and many... who could not be absorbed even by the affluent German economy and who will be living on the dole for years."

Waszczykowski also argued that Poland “has been managing the influx of migrants in a responsible way.”

“We are keeping tabs on those coming in from the East, identifying everyone who arrives," said Waszczykowski, adding that Poland's authorities "have issued over 1.2 million visas to Ukrainians and are able to accept them on the labour market."

Before travelling to Rome, Waszczykowski was in Palermo to attend a migration conference held by the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
