Masum is expected to meet Polish President Andrzej Duda and Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło, with security a major talking point amid ongoing conflict with the so-called Islamic State, and another with the Kurdish minority from Iraq's north.

Iraq has largely pushed Islamic State out of most of its cities, but ISIS militants remain near the Syrian border.

Poland is part of an international coalition fighting against ISIS, and Polish soldiers are also part of a NATO mission to Iraq to teach its soldiers how to renovate Soviet-era military equipment.

Meanwhile, Bagdad is also involved in a conflict with the Kurdistan region, after Kurds voted in favour of becoming independent in September. Bagdad has taken hold of the city of Kirkuk, and grounded planes at Iraqi Kurdistan's airport.

Trade, particularly Polish food exports, and rebuilding the Iraqi economy are also to be discussed by the Polish and Iraqi presidents, Polish presidential aide Krzysztof Szczerski said.

Trade between Poland and Iraq was worth USD 500 million (EUR 430 million, PLN 1.8 billion) last year.

Szczerski said the presidents would also talk humanitarian aid to war-torn Iraq, and scientific and cultural partnership. (vb/pk)
