The founder of Geopolitical Futures has said that Poland is in the crosshairs of the EU, which he argued wants to retain control over the internal policies of the bloc’s member states.

In an interview with the Monday issue of conservative Polish weekly Sieci, George Friedman said that one of the hallmarks of a rising power is that waning powers direct their heaviest guns against it.

Poland targeted because it is important: Friedman

Poland has been targeted because it is an important country, Friedman argued.

That is why the United Kingdom, which he said is leaving the EU because of interference from Brussels, has symbolically concluded a defence treaty with Warsaw, Friedman was cited as saying.

He added that Poland is currently the leader of a bloc of countries that oppose European liberal elites’ concept of what the European community should be.

Article 7

The European Commission in December took the unprecedented step of triggering Article 7 of the EU Treaty against Poland, stepping up pressure on Warsaw over controversial changes to the judicial system by the country’s ruling conservatives.

The move means that the EU’s executive wants the bloc’s member states to declare that the rule of law in Poland is under threat.

Friedman said that Poles in 2015 elected a government headed by the conservative Law and Justice party which is doing what it promised to do.

Eurocrats do not understand Poles, says political scientist

Meanwhile, Eurocrats are dreaming of a single European identity and do not understand Poles, he continued.

The more that Poles come under pressure, the more they remember their loss of their sovereignty in the past and the more stubborn they become, he said.

He added that Germany is the “last country” that should teach others about human rights.
