Poland backs prospective resolution on Syria: FM

Poland is in favour of a resolution on ongoing killings of civilians in Syria, Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz said during an address to the UN Security Council ministerial briefing in New York on Wednesday.

Czaputowicz voiced concern over human rights violations in the war-torn country.
At least 310 civilians have been killed and 1,550 injured in bombardments of rebel-held eastern Ghouta by government forces since Sunday night, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Reuters reported.
“Poland is in favour of a resolution on the issue and is actively engaged in drafting the document,” Czaputowicz said, adding that the key goal of the document was “an armistice and humanitarian aid”.
Czaputowicz said the Security Council should safeguard sovereignty and a peaceful resolution of disputes.
While speaking on Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea, he added that it was crucial for countries to comply with international law and territorial integrity.
“We must make sure that [countries] follow international law and Russia’s actions concerning Crimea and [Moscow’s] support for separatists in [Ukraine’s war-torn eastern region of] Donbas infringes this law,” Czaputowicz added.
During his visit to New York, Poland’s foreign minister also held bilateral talks with his Slovak opposite number Miroslav Lajcak, who is the president of the UN General Assembly, and Ivory Coast Foreign Minister Marcel Amon Tanoh. (aba/vb)
