Brussels-based Eurocontrol said that flight plans filed on Tuesday morning had been lost but that the fault had been identified and operations should be back to normal by the evening.

"Today 29,500 flights were expected in the European network. Approximately half of those could have some delay as a result of the system outage," Eurocontrol said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to Britain's The Independent website, half a million airline passengers across Europe faced delays and cancellations.

Delays in takeoffs and landings were also expected to occur at Poland's airports, including Warsaw’s international Chopin Airport, according to a spokesman for the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency, Mateusz Sokołowski.
