In the 28-nation European Union as a whole, 47% of waste is recycled on average, according to IAR.

Members of the European Parliament were on Wednesday to vote on plans to set a municipal waste recycling target of 55% by 2025.

Germany leads the way in the EU: there, 66% of waste is recycled, IAR said.

In 2014, European Union countries produced 2.5 billion tonnes of waste.
