A Polish national was attacked in the British city of Hull in "a racially aggravated assault” on Sunday, local police reported.

On Sunday evening, a gang numbering 20 people chased, struck down and beat the 20-year-old Pole with a nail-studded wooden plank, the police told Poland's PAP news agency on Wednesday.

Three other men accompanying the Pole, identified by local media as eastern Europeans, managed to escape.

“The group were standing on the street, and when they heard us speaking in Polish they began to shout at us and throw a few bottles,” one of the assaulted men told Hull Daily Mail.

"We are treating this as a racially aggravated assault,” an officer told PAP.

Around a million Poles live in Britain, comprising the largest national minority in that country.
