Preventive diplomacy, or efforts to prevent disputes from escalating into conflicts, is key to sustaining peace in the world, Poland’s foreign minister has said.

Speaking at a high-level debate at the UN General Assembly in New York, Jacek Czaputowicz said that “for peace to be sustainable, we should strive to use all instruments in an effective way.”

Czaputowicz told the UN General Assembly on Tuesday that most UN activities at the local and regional levels were “about building and sustaining peace.”

“Poland attaches particular importance to preventive diplomacy and the role of the United Nations in this field,” Czaputowicz said, as quoted by the Polish foreign ministry on its website.

He also said that there would be debates on the role of law in international relations and UN peacekeeping operations during Poland’s presidency of the UN Security Council in May.

Poland became a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for a two-year term on January 1.

Czaputowicz later that month told public broadcaster TVP that Poland would focus on strengthening international law as part of its UN Security Council presidency.
