The United States on Friday urged Russia to “acknowledge its role” in the downing of a Malaysia Airlines passenger jet in 2014 that killed all 298 aboard.

“It is time for Russia to acknowledge its role in the shooting down of MH17 and to cease its callous disinformation campaign,” US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement cited by Poland’s PAP news agency.

The statement also blamed Russian aggression in Ukraine for more than 10,300 deaths, PAP added.

On July 17, 2014, Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down while flying over territory held by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board, most of them from the Netherlands. Dozens of them were Australian citizens.

The Netherlands and Australia said on Friday they held Russia partly responsible for the shooting down of the passenger jet.

A team of Dutch-led international investigators on Thursday said that the missile which brought down the plane belonged to a Russian brigade, the BBC reported.

Russia has denied any involvement in the downing.

Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok was quoted by the BBC as saying: "The Netherlands and Australia are now convinced that Russia is responsible for the deployment of the Buk installation that was used to down MH17."
