Poland's Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz has called for international peacekeeping forces to be sent to Ukraine, Polish Radio’s IAR news agency has reported.

Czaputowicz made the appeal at a UN Security Council session at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Tuesday, according to IAR.

Poland on January 1 became a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for a two-year term that ends on December 31, 2019.

During an address, Czaputowicz took Russia to task over the conflict in Ukraine, which he said should not be forgotten, IAR reported.

Czaputowicz also referred to comments by the US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, who on Tuesday called the conflict in Ukraine "a textbook example of the direct violation of the sovereignty of one (UN) member state by another member state," according to CNN.

Haley added that as long as Russia continues the conflict, US sanctions would remain in place, CNN reported.

Czaputowicz in late April said that Poland’s priorities for its UN Security Council presidency included "strengthening the role of international law, promoting the effective resolution of conflicts, ensuring the protection of civilians, and emphasising the importance of humanitarian law.”
