Last August, fierce winds and heavy downpour wreaked havoc in Poland’s north, killing six people and damaging nearly 5,000 buildings, most of them homes, the Rzeczpospolita daily said.

According to Poland’s State Forests authority, some 38,000 hectares of forest were destroyed, the newspaper added.

Storm damage was estimated at PLN 2.1 billion (EUR 486 million, USD 564 millon) by the interior ministry, Rzeczpospolita noted.

The European Union aid money earmarked for Poland is intended to help finance work to clear the forests, repair roads and rail tracks as well as to restore damaged infrastructure, the paper reported.

The European Commission has also offered financial assistance to other countries affected by storms, such as Lithuania (EUR 17 million), Bulgaria (EUR 2.2 million) and Greece (EUR 2.5 million), according to the Polish daily.

The EU executive’s proposal needs to be greenlighted by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union.
