Poland joins UNESCO cultural heritage committee

Poland is among 12 countries joining a UNESCO committee which aims to raise awareness about and protect unique practices and skills, such as crafts, languages, performances and rituals.

Poland was selected to join the International Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage for a four-year term during a UNESCO session in Paris on June 4-6.
In Central and Eastern Europe, these include the UNESCO heritage-listed ritual acrobatic căluș dance of Bulgaria, the Nestinarstvo fire ritual practised by villagers from the Strandzha Mountains near the Black Sea coast, and Slovakia’s fujara woodwind instrument.
Poland does not have any UNESCO-listed elements of intangible cultural heritage.
The committee has 24 members serving four-year terms, half of whom are replaced every two years.
Poland was selected to the committee alongside Azerbaijan, Cameroon, China, Djibouti, Jamaica, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, the Netherlands, Sri Lanka and Togo.
More than 170 states are parties to an international convention on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage.
Poland served on UNESCO's World Heritage Committee from 2013-2017 and hosted the committee's 41st session in Kraków last year. (vb/pk)
