In his letter of resignation, Brexit Secretary David Davis said he was unpersuaded that our negotiating approach will not just lead to further demands for concessions" from Brussels.

He added that May made it unlikely that he would achieve his aim of having the UK leave the bloc's free trade area and the shared market.

May said she did not agree with Davis' “characterisation of the policy we agreed at Cabinet on Friday.

The resignation hints at fractures within May's government.

British state broadcaster BBC reported that two undersecretaries of state at the foreign ministry left alongside Davis, while Conservative MP Peter Bone said: "The PM's proposals for a Brexit in name only are not acceptable."

The BBC reported that the opposition Labour Party chairman Ian Lavery said: "This is absolute chaos and Theresa May has no authority left," and leader Jeremy Corbyn said May was "incapable of delivering Brexit".

Britain is to leave the European Union in 2019.

About a million Poles live in the UK. May previously said that they would continue to be allowed to live and work in the UK after Brexit.

The British immigration minister earlier this year proposed a settlement scheme for European Union citizens living in the UK. (vb)
