The man, identified only as Wojciech K., was wanted under a European Arrest Warrant on suspicion of running a group which could have trafficked hash and cocaine to Europe, Polish police said.

He may have been in hiding in Montenegro since the middle of last year, police added.

According to Polish police, the gang allegedly run by the suspect operated from 2004 to 2016. In that time it could have smuggled more than 20 tonnes of hash from Morocco and 1.5 tonnes of cocaine from South America.

The drugs, worth PLN 320 million, are believed to have arrived in Spain before being shipped to Poland, Belgium, the UK and Scandinavia.

More than a dozen other people suspected of being involved in the cartel have been detained, and cash, luxury apartments, boats and cars have been seized in Spain and Poland. (vb/pk)
