Annan was an internationally respected diplomat and a laureate of the Nobel Prize for Peace.

As a United Nations' representative in Syria he tried to bring about a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in the country, before redirecting his attention to the Rohingya crisis.

Annan, a Ghanan national, died in Switzerland on August 18, 2018. He was 80-years-old. (vb/di)
