“I am deeply moved by the untimely passing of Senator John McCain, a war hero, true statesman, and a devoted friend of Poland,” Polish President Andrzej Duda said on Twitter in English on Sunday.

He added: “Will always carry in my heart the conversation we had back in 2016 and his profound knowledge of geopolitics. R.I.P., Senator.”

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki tweeted: “I was saddened to hear of the passing of John McCain. A true American patriot and a proven friend of Poland has passed away. A tireless guardian of freedom and democracy, a man of principle in politics. RIP.”

McCain, a Vietnam war hero turned senator and presidential contender, died at his home in Arizona on Saturday, according to a statement from his office.

He was diagnosed with a brain tumour last year.

His family announced on Friday that McCain, who ran against Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election, had decided to cease medical treatment.
