Pole accused of separatist links detained in Indonesia: report

A police report cited by the Associated Press described Jakub Fabian S. (surname withheld due to Poland’s privacy laws) as a 39-year-old journalist. The man was detained on Monday, following the arrests of five Papuans who possessed “a quantity of ammunition,” the AP said.

Jakub S. had allegedly visited a separatist headquarters, according to the police report. The journalist reportedly misused his tourist visa and travel permit for Papua, thus violating the country’s immigration laws.

The Indonesian authorities have barred journalists from entering the country’s remote, easternmost provinces of Papua and New Papua, where separatist unrest has been growing for decades.

Amnesty International said in July that Indonesian police and military were behind at least 95 unlawful killings in Papua since 2010.
