Polish-US relations, expanding US military presence in Poland and the implementation of decisions taken at NATO summits were the focal points of talks between Poland’s Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford, Poland’s defence ministry said, according to a report.

Dunford, who is an advisor to US Defence Secretary James Mattis and President Donald Trump, is taking part in a conference of the NATO’s Military Committee in Warsaw.

During their meeting, Dunford and Błaszczak discussed the deployment of more US troops to Poland.

Błaszczak “spoke positively of the effects of the European Deterrence Initiative” Poland’s PAP news agency reported citing the ministry. The initiative comprises the Atlantic Resolve operation, under which a US armoured brigade combat team is stationed in Poland.

The talks also involved the decisions taken at the NATO summits in Warsaw and Brussels, including the confirmed need to adapt the alliance to new challenges.

Błaszczak spoke of the long-standing and dynamically expanding Polish-US relations within the scope of defence.

“Collaboration between Poland and the US has taken on the form of a strategic defence partnership, manifested in the participation of both armies in operations aimed at enhancing global security in countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan,” the ministry said, according to PAP.

The Military Committee, which is NATO’s highest military authority, meets twice a year at the alliance’s headquarters in Brussels, and it also meets in an allied member country once a year.
