Germany’s Weber visits Auschwitz

He stood for several minutes in silence in front of the Death Wall, where the German Nazis executed thousands of camp prisoners, mainly Poles, during World War II.

Weber also toured several sections of the Auschwitz Museum, which documents the mass extermination of Jews.

He wrote in the Auschwitz Visitors Book: “This is a place where one should remain silent. What is a man capable of … guided by inhumane racial hatred. Europe has to remember what people, and specifically Germans, are capable of. Never again.”

Earlier this month, 46-year-old Weber was elected head of the European People’s Party, the largest group in the European Parliament.

According to many observers, he stands a chance of succeeding Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the European Commission next year.
