Duda was expected to meet his counterpart Rumen Radev to discuss security as well as regional and European cooperation.

Krzysztof Szczerski, a senior foreign policy adviser to President Duda, said that issues on the agenda for talks included security in the Black Sea region, the EU budget, energy and collaboration as part of the Three Seas initiative.

Three Seas initiative aims to boost cooperation among countries between the Black, Baltic and Adriatic Seas.

Szczerski said: “Bulgaria is striving to join the Schengen [passport-free] zone, among other efforts, and the country has Poland’s support.”

“This solidarity, however, must be backed up by concrete joint infrastructure projects, which will boost economic ties,” he added.

Duda’s trip to Bulgaria was his second visit to that country since he was elected president in May 2015.

Radev was in Warsaw in June for a Bucharest Nine summit bringing together Poland, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and Slovakia.
