Polish FM urges ‘flexible’ EU approach to Britain

Speaking in Brussels on Monday, Jacek Czaputowicz told reporters that Poland was advocating “a certain measure of flexibility” as a Brexit without a deal would be the “worst solution,” including for Poles who work and live in Britain.

British Prime Minister Theresa May on Monday postponed a parliamentary vote on a Brexit agreement she had negotiated with the European Union to avoid a situation where “the deal would be rejected by a significant margin.”

May told the House of Commons in London that she would return to Brussels to seek more concessions.

But the European Commission said it did not intend to renegotiate the agreement.

Meanwhile, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled on Monday that Britain was free to reverse its decision to leave the bloc.

Britain started the process of leaving the European Union last year, with a final divorce date set for March 29, 2019.

Figures from Britain’s Office for National Statistics show that some 985,000 Poles lived in Britain in June this year, down from 1.02 million in December last year, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency has reported.
