Caritas Polska, the Polish arm of the international Catholic charity organisation, plans to allocate PLN 100,000 (around EUR 23,370, USD 26,600) in aid to those affected by the disaster in Indonesia, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency has reported.

The charity was appealing to Poles to show solidarity by making donations, including through text messages.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the tsunami rose to 429, with almost 1,500 others injured and 154 missing, as rescuers combed through rubble for survivors, the IAR news agency reported on Tuesday.

The deadly wave struck the Sunda Strait between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra late on Saturday.

Pope Francis, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, on Sunday appealed to the international community to support the victims of Indonesia’s devastating tsunami.

Polish President Andrzej Duda has sent a message of condolence to Indonesian leader Joko Widodo.
