The 22-year-old tried to take the gun through the border crossing at Dorohusk into western Ukraine on Friday, the polskatimes.pl news website cited officials as saying.

It added that Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) and prosecutors were investigating.

Parts of the gun were being transported by truck in marked crates, Lech Wieczerza, the head of the District Prosecutor's Office in Chełm, eastern Poland, was cited as saying by polskatimes.pl.

The man had documents on him, but they were insufficient. He knew what he was carrying, Wieczerza said, as quoted by the website.

A howitzer is a short cannon used to fire projectiles with relatively high trajectories.

It is used against targets such as tanks and armoured vehicles, polskatimes.pl reported.
