The situation in NATO was the main subject of a meeting between Polish President Andrzej Duda and the secretary general of the military alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Talking to Polish reporters, Duda said the two men agreed that over the past few years NATO has demonstrated its vitality.

“The tough decisions taken at the summits in Wales and, even more so, in Warsaw, have changed entirely the way in which NATO is being perceived in today’s world,” Duda said.

He added that by deploying its forces on the alliance’s eastern flank, NATO had shown its capability to act and adapt itself to changing security conditions.

The Polish president said that his talks with the NATO chief also covered the participation of Polish troops in international missions, including prospects for expanding the Polish contingent in Iraq by sending a training mission there.

“This was a proposal put forward by NATO’s Secretary General. I said I would discuss it with the defence minister and, naturally, the prime minister,” Duda said.

While in Davos for the World Economic Forum, Duda also held a meeting with Brazil’s new president, Jair Bolsonaro.

“The president has accepted an invitation to visit Poland. I hope that an agreement on avoiding double taxation between Poland and Brazil will have been concluded by then in order to facilitate bilateral trade and economic relations,” Duda told journalists.

The last visit by a Brazilian president to Poland was in 2002.
