Polish first lady charms Panama

The Polish first lady has visited Panama to take part in the Roman Catholic Church’s World Youth Day gathering, the president’s office in Warsaw has noted, posting a slew of photographs from the trip.

During her brief visit, Agata Kornhauser-Duda met groups of Polish people who travelled to Panama for the event, which ended on Sunday and was one of the world’s largest international religious gatherings.

Kornhauser-Duda attended a mass celebrated by Pope Francis on Sunday.

After the mass, Kornhauser-Duda held a brief conversation with the pontiff, who thanked Poles "for their strong presence and testimony of faith during the meeting in Panama and for organisational help, which Polish partners have given to Panamanians," according to the Polish president’s office.

More than 3,500 pilgrims from Poland traveled to Panama for World Youth Day, public broadcaster Polish Radio has reported.

Among the Polish pilgrims was the crew of the tall ship Dar Młodzieży, which arrived in Panama as part of a cruise around the world aiming to promote Poland as it celebrated 100 years of independence.

Kornhauser-Duda visited the Polish sailing ship after the World Youth Day festivities drew to a close, the Polish president’s office said.

It reported that the Dar Młodzieży was also toured by officials including Panama’s President Juan Carlos Varela.
