Poland’s president will probably meet his German counterpart on September 1 to mark the 80th anniversary of World War II breaking out, an official has said.

Poland’s Andrzej Duda will likely meet Germany’s Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Wieluń, the first Polish city to be bombed by the Germans. The attack was carried out at 4:40am on September 1, 1939.

Wojciech Kolarski, a senior aide to Duda, said: "I can reveal that on September 1 there will most probably be a meeting between President Andrzej Duda and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who will mark this tragic anniversary together in Wieluń."

The first bombs of World War II fell on a hospital in Wieluń, killing 32 people, including 26 patients. In all, the Germans killed 1,200 to 2,000 civilians in the city that day, according to estimates.

Wieluń, in central Poland, was located close to the Polish-German border before national boundaries shifted after the war.
