Czaputowicz’s comments came in a phone conversation about Venezuela with Chile’s Foreign Minister Roberto Ampuero Espinoza.

Czaputowicz told his counterpart “that in view of Nicolas Maduro’s failure to call early presidential elections, Poland intended, together with the other EU member states, to recognise Juan Guaidó, the president of the democratically elected National Assembly, as Venezuela’s interim president, who will be charged with the task of organising free, fair and democratic elections.”

The Chilean foreign minister emphasised that Venezuelans have the right to decide about their future, the foreign ministry in Warsaw said on its website.

Guaidó leads the opposition-controlled National Assembly. He declared himself interim president last month, dividing the international community.

Poland’s foreign ministry last month called for “the respect of fundamental civic freedoms” in Venezuela.
