Twenty military units in Poland are to hold picnics and military equipment shows to celebrate the anniversary during the weekend.

On Monday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told Polish Radio that Warsaw is a “highly valued ally” of the alliance.

“Poland is an ally which is contributing in many different ways to our shared security, to our collective defence,” Stoltenberg said in an interview in Brussels.

He added that Poland is “one of the nations which are spending 2 percent of GDP on defence.”

Stoltenberg said that Poland joining NATO in 1999 was an important step towards maintaining peace in Europe.

“The enlargement of NATO with Poland, but also with many other allies, former Warsaw Pact members, shows the enormous achievement of NATO in promoting peace, stability throughout Europe,” he told Polish Radio.

Stoltenberg is on Thursday scheduled to start a two-day visit to Poland.

He is to hold meetings with President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

The visit is to serve as an opportunity to sum up the two decades of Poland’s membership of NATO.
