“Over two decades, Poland has shown time and again it is a strong and committed NATO Ally,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg tweeted after talks with Poland’s President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in Warsaw on Thursday.

Stoltenberg said: “In Warsaw today, I thanked President Andrzej Duda and PM Morawiecki for leading by example on defence spending and making significant investments in new capabilities.”

Earlier on Thursday Stoltenberg praised Poland for its contribution as an ally, including its role in foreign missions and defence spending.

During a meeting with President Duda at Warsaw's Belvedere Palace, the NATO chief said: “I want to thank Poland especially for what you do when it comes to defence spending. You are leading by example. You allocate 2 percent of the GDP to defence, and this is important, not least because we see the GDP of Poland is growing, so you are allocating more and more money for defence every year.”

During his two-day visit to Warsaw, Stoltenberg was on Friday scheduled to attend a meeting of the European People’s Party (EPP), the biggest group in the European Parliament, and take part in a conference marking 20 years since NATO was enlarged to include Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary will on Tuesday mark exactly two decades since they became members of NATO.
