The UK should be given a chance to delay Brexit by several months, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said shortly before an EU summit started in Brussels on Thursday.

Morawiecki opposed imposing conditions on London.

He said he had held talks with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday morning.

"I think it is worth reaching a compromise to give our friends a few months to leave the EU. That will be in the interests of the EU, Poland and Britain," Morawiecki told reporters in Brussels.

He added that a no-deal “hard” Brexit would be “very bad for Britain, but it will also be very bad for the EU."

May, facing a political crisis at home after her failure to secure parliamentary backing for a Brexit deal, on Wednesday requested a three-month delay to Britain’s departure from the European Union.

Britain had been due to leave the bloc on March 29.

The Reuters news agency reported earlier on Thursday that EU leaders were expected to give May an extra two months—on condition that she can get her deal through the British parliament, which is deeply divided on the issue.
