Four US senators propose sanctions over Nord Stream 2: report

Four US senators have proposed new rules to allow financial and visa penalties to be imposed by America on firms and people involved in building Russia's Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, according to a newspaper.

The contested pipeline aims to send Russian gas to Germany via the Baltic Sea, bypassing the Baltic states, Poland and Ukraine.
Warsaw and Washington have both strongly criticised the project.
Poland’s Gazeta Polska Codziennie daily reported on Monday that the US senators behind the plan to allow sanctions were Republicans John Barrasso from Wyoming, Tom Cotton from Arkansas and Ted Cruz from Texas, in cooperation with Democrat Jeanne Shaheen from New Hampshire.
Meanwhile, Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, a Polish member of the European Parliament, has said that the proposal does not automatically mean that sanctions will be introduced.
The bill needs not only the consent of the Senate and the House of Representatives, but also of US President Donald Trump, Saryusz-Wolski said in a commentary published by the biznesalert.pl website.
He added: “However, even sceptics can’t deny that this new proposal is another warning signal from the United States to Russia.”
The 1,200-kilometre Nord Stream 2 pipeline is expected to supply around 55 billion cubic metres of natural gas a year from Russia to Germany.
US Vice President Mike Pence warned earlier this year that America “cannot ensure the defence of the West” if its allies grow dependent on Moscow as a result of projects such as Nord Stream 2.
