“I'm very happy that the hard work I put into this film with my friends has been noticed,” enthused director Grzegorz Zariczny, as cited by Polish public broadcaster TVP.

“I hope that this award helps not only me, but prompts Poland to pay more attention to documentaries, so that more of these films get made and it becomes easier to secure funding,” he added.

The Whistle (Gwizdek) follows Marcin Bator, a low league football referee who is striving for a change in his career.

Director Zariczny was very much at home with the subject, having been a referee himself some years ago.

The film has already won a number of awards in Poland, including Best Short Decumentary at the T-Mobile New Horizons Festival in Wroclaw.

The Sundance Film Festival runs until 27 January. Also competing this year for Poland is Jacek Borcuch's Lasting, which is being shown in the main international features competition (World Dramatic). (nh)
