Jan Komasa's City 44 (Miasto 44) is due to have its premiere on 1 August at the National Stadium in Warsaw, marking the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the insurgency.

Komasa's film, which is co-funded by the Polish Film Institute (PISF), has one of the biggest budgets in the country's cinematic history, with a combined pool of 24 million zloty (5.7 million euro).

Special effects master Richard Bain, who worked on movies such as Peter Jackson's King Kong, Christopher Nolan's Inception and Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus has provided his skills for the wartime drama.

Komasa is considered one of Poland's hottest young talents after winning both critical and popular acclaim for his 2011 debut Suicide Room. Both Andrzej Wajda and Roman Polanski were among the directors to heap praise on the movie.

As with Suicide Room, Komasa penned the script for City 44 himself, interviewing countless veterans of the insurgency over several years.

The Warsaw Rising broke out on 1 August 1944, led by the Home Army (AK), the underground force loyal to the Polish government-in-exile in London.

The partisans were equipped to fight for about a week unaided, but help from supposed allies the Russians was not forthcoming, in spite of earlier pledges.

The rising lasted for two months before the AK capitulated. Some 200,000 Poles died – mostly civilians – and a Soviet-backed communist regime was ultimately installed in Poland after the war.

Following the 1 August premiere, City 44 will go on general release in Poland on 19 September.
