The decision ties in with the city's tenure as the European Capital of Culture that year.

“Civic leaders in Wroclaw have developed an excellent programme that will promote reading among the wider public all through the year,” said Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova.

According to a statement released by UNESCO, the city won over the selection committee owing to “its special focus on grass-root community involvement, as well as the promotion of publishing, bookselling industries and libraries at regional and international levels.”

The tenure always begins on 23 April, World Copyright Day.

The selection committee is composed of the International Publishers Association (IPA), the International Booksellers Federation (IBF) and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).

The first city to be designated World Book Capital was Madrid in 2001.

Since then, other cities that have been given the honour were Alexandria (2002), New Delhi (2003), Antwerp (2004), Montreal (2005), Turin (2006), Bogota (2007), Amsterdam (2008), Beirut (2009), Ljubljana (2010), Buenos Aires (2011), Yerevan (2012), Bangkok (2013) and Port Harcourt (2014).

South Korea's third city Incheon will be World Book Capital in 2015. (nh)
