Domingo, who is suffering from a bladder infection and respiratory problem, had played the role of Count Di Luna three times at this year’s event.

The remaining three performances, with Rucinski as his stand-in, are scheduled for tonight and August 21 and 24. Russian soprano Anna Netrebko sings the part of Leonora.

Alongside Piotr Beczała, Mariusz Kwiecień and Aleksandra Kurzak, Artur Ruciński belongs to a select group of Polish opera singers who have skyrocketed to stardom in recent years. He made his debut at the National Opera in Warsaw in 2002.

The turning point of his career came with Daniel Barenboim’s invitation to sing Eugene Onegin under his baton and alongside Rolando Villazon at the Deutsche Staatsoper in Berlin in 2010.

Last May he made his Covent Garden debut as Germond in Verdi’s ‘Il Traviata' and next month he is to sing Count Di Luna at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice: 2016 is to see his Metropolitan Opera debut as Sharpless in Puccini’s ‘Madama Butterfly’. (mk/pg)
