Minister of Culture Malgorzata Omilanowska signed an agreement with Mayor of Warsaw Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz concerning the ongoing refurbishment of the 11 buildings concerned, which lie on the capital's Old Town Square.

It is hoped that the museum will reopen its doors in the Spring of 2016, during Warsaw's annual Museums Night (Noc Muzeow), when visitors can enter cultural institutions free of charge.

10 million zloty (2.3 million euro) will supplement the 25 million zloty (5.9 million euro) allocated in recent years via EEA and Norway Grants.

Non-EU member states Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway make the contributions in return for favourable trading relations with EU countries.

The grants are designed to help new EU member states that were once behind the Iron Curtain, as well as EU states struggling with recession.

Besides contributing to the ongoing refurbishment of the Warsaw museum, the funds will also be used to digitization of parts of the collection. (nh)
