Omilanowska reflected that where culture is concerned, Krakow belies its reputation as a conservative city.

The new Cricoteka headquarters have a suitably bold design for an artist and dramatist who thrived on innovation.

Tadeusz Kantor (1915-1990), who is considered one of the giants of the 20th century theatrical avant-garde, set up his Cricot 2 theatre in Krakow in 1955.

His reputation soon spread beyond Polish borders, and he managed to traverse the divide of the Iron Curtain, garnering followers in the West as well as in his native country.

The new Cricoteka building was designed by Stanislaw Denko and Moon Studio, and the realisation of the project cost over 50 million zloty (11.8 million euro), 85 percent of which was funded by the EU.

Several of members Kantor's Cricot 2 theatre were present at the opening of the centre, as well as veteran film-maker Andrzej Wajda.

Malgorzata Omilanowska is acting Minister of Culture following the dissolution of the cabinet on Thursday, when President Bronislaw Komorowski formally accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Donald Tusk. A new cabinet is set to be approved by Komorowski on 22 September.
